The course covers how to prepare for service locating work, contact the national referral service and utility owners, use service locating equipment, mark out services, establish clearance distances, and advise on protection and non-destructive excavation requirements.

This unit applies to workers in operational roles and those overseeing construction work. It is relevant to any role that involves ground disturbance — including excavation, drilling, boring, and driving — where underground services such as gas, water, electrical, telecommunications, and sewer infrastructure may be present.
